Lauritz Jensen 1859-1935 After attending the technical school he studied under Vilhelm Bissen (1836-1913) and was enrolled in The Royal Academy of Copenhagen October 1877. After graduation in 1885 he was regular contributor to the Charlottenborg Art Exhibition in Copenhagen, and was an active board member of the art circles in Copenhagen at that time, which eventually made him a member of the Royal Academy Council 1909-1917.
L. Jensen became one of the best animal sculptors of his time, both in the grand format of the statue and when it comes to smaller figurines. As early as the Nordic Exhibition in 1888 he was recognized for his enormous group called: ”A Celtic man on horse fighting the Urus (ox)’. This piece and his small figurines showed both his foundation in the contemporary naturalism and his ability to grasp spirit of the animals and at the same time describe them correctly. His later works for the porcelain manufactories shows his fondness for the lion and other wild cats as his motives.
His wide spread popularity were gained though his work for the four great players in the Golden Age of Danish Industrial Art. The career started as figurine maker under Bertel Ipsen (1846-1917) at the Art Pottry called P. Ipsens Enke from about 1885. At this factory his was noted for 91 figurines. After that he worked in period for Bing & Grondahl and Royal Copenhagen. AT the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory he was in the period 1906 – 1916 noted for at least 15 figurines. There might be more Royal Copenhagen figurines with a LJ signature and if you have such information, please share it with us. We are also looking for specific details about his periods at Bing & Grondahl.
After the death of Lauritz Jensens, Jens Peter Dahl Jensen (1874-1960) bought his entire collection of models, of which 30 pieces were recreated in porcelain
